Every office has a lost-and-found box.
Old chargers.
Water bottles.
Scarves.
Keys.
Our office had one too.
But one thing never moved.
A plain black umbrella.
Every Friday—
I walked past it.
Every Friday—
it was still there.
Someone even taped a note above the box.
**Please claim lost items.**
Weeks became months.
Nobody came.
One rainy evening—
I stayed late finishing reports.
As I walked toward the parking lot, heavy rain started pouring.
I remembered the umbrella.
I looked around.
Nobody else was there.
So I borrowed it.
"I'll bring it back tomorrow," I told myself.
When I pressed the button—
the umbrella opened.
A tiny folded piece of paper floated onto the ground.
I picked it up.
It read—
"If you needed this today...
I'm glad you found it."
I smiled.
That was unexpectedly kind.
Then I turned the paper over.
A date.
Almost one year earlier.
Curious—
I searched the umbrella carefully.
Inside one corner—
written in tiny letters—
"Leave it here after using."
The next morning—
I returned it to the lost-and-found box.
I also asked the receptionist.
"Does anyone know whose umbrella this is?"
She laughed.
"Oh...
that umbrella."
"You know about it?"
She nodded.
"A former employee left it."
"Before he transferred."
"He always said...
someone forgets an umbrella every rainy season."
I smiled.
"So he left his?"
She nodded.
"And every few months...
he mailed another note."
"What?"
She opened the drawer.
There were several folded notes.
Each one different.
One read—
"I hope you got home safely."
Another—
"Bad weather doesn't last forever."
Another—
"If today has been difficult...
I hope tomorrow is kinder."
I stared.
He wasn't leaving an umbrella.
He was leaving encouragement.
For strangers.
For whoever happened to need it.
That evening—
I bought another umbrella.
Placed it beside the first one.
Inside...
I left my own note.
"If this helped you...
please help someone else someday."
A month later—
both umbrellas were still there.
But my note was gone.
In its place...
someone had written—
"It already did."
Now—
our office has six umbrellas.
Nobody knows who added the others.
Every rainy season...
someone borrows one.
Someone returns it.
And someone leaves another kind note.
Because sometimes—
the smallest acts of kindness...
don't belong to one person.
They quietly become everyone's tradition.
